Post about NYC, I know...
I've been back from my two New York trips for a while now and this post is much belated. I uploaded two albums on Picasa, enjoy or at least pretend to ;)

Jewel in the Lotus

Leaving for NY in two days. The last time and only time I've been there was close to three years ago. I was there with other art students and I remember a lot of cheap pizza and running, don't remember why....
[Pic from last trip]
I imagine this trip will be quite different. For one, we will be getting a tour from Uma Thurman's brother, Ganden. Their father is the top Buddhist scholar in the country, hence their names.
Totally unrelated, this is a cool video that Katie sent me and I will reiterate her disclaimer to not watch this in a public place with "sensitive eyes" around. It's kind of long but the interesting part begins about half way through to the end. Enjoy and thank me when you're done.

Bonanza
New York, New York!!
Not to gloat or anything but I going there twice this quarter and they're both paid for! The first trip is to the CAA (College Art Association) annual conference, in NY this year. This is the big daddy conference for art and art history, a circus of academic divas and schmoozing, I expect. There's even an optional gala at MoMA, which might be an interesting experience but I won't be there early enough for it. The other trip was a total surprise, announced on the first day of my Indian art seminar class. The topic of the class was changed to Western conception of Tibet and its display of Tibetan art. The professor of my class got a generous grant from a private donor and we're the lucky beneficiaries! It's opportunities like this that makes up for being a poor art historian...

From Justin to Kelly; C-bus to CoMo
Greetings from Columbia, the best hometown ever! Downtown is very festive this year, more than usual, maybe it's just my perception. I managed to avoid the mall this year and got almost all my presents from downtown.
I found this old post that I never got around to posting:
Updated list of discoveries in Columbus:
1. Yellow Springs, Ohio. Ok, this is not officially in Columbus but it's only an hour away, well worth the drive. Good shops, old hippie vibe, disproportionately large number of coffee shops, hiking trails, good folks that keep mum about their most famous citizen, Dave Chapelle.
2. Old Deaf School Topiary Garden. Topiary landscape replica of Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Couldn't have picked a better painting and a better setting, a retreat in the middle of downtown high-rises. Good kitsch is the best.
3. Bloody Marys at Surly Girl. Not always consistent but when they're good, mmm. No where else will give me 6 olives!
4. Happy Hour at Hound Dog's Pizza. Comatose-good pizza, probably the best ever (even Shakespeare's), the reason I need to get movin' again over break.
5. Fireplace at the 'Joe, I still love you.
**Falling off the list this year is the #2 bus. The service has been less consistent this year, though the mean driver who looks like he's about to drive off the cliff is no longer on this route.

things in the news
After fulfilling my civic duty in four previous elections and being disappointed every time, finally, at last, results that I like!!! Missouri, you finally came through...and Ohio, you aren't so bad after all. In addition to the congressional victories, the entire state is now smoke-free! Granted, it's not a constitutional amendment but still pretty good.
On PBS this week, a writer from the STL Post-Dispatch referred to Columbia as the "Berkeley of Missouri." Yeah, I know, wishful thinking but it makes me proud that if any place in MO can be that, it would be good ol' CoMo.
